Entering the Land: The Book of Joshua
Rabbi David Silber
Sundays: 11 Sessions

In this class we will study the book of Joshua carefully from a literary perspective. Through this study, we will explore core biblical questions: what does it mean to be a disciple, and how can a student turn into a teacher? Can anyone replace Moses? Does Joshua fulfill the Torah’s commands about conquest of the land? What can this teach us about war and the possibility of peace?

Co-sponsored by: Shearith Israel / The Spanish & Portuguese Synagogue
2 West 70th Street

November 4, 11, 18
December 2, 9, 16, & 23

Drisha in Skokie–Judaism Before the Rabbis: Jewish Literature in the Greco-Roman World
Dr. Malka Simkovich
Four Sundays in October: 7, 14, 21, 28, 7:00 PM

This course will explore the centuries which bridge the Israelite religion and the normative Judaism of the rabbis, a time when Jews living throughout the Greco-Roman world freely expressed their Jewish pride by integrating aspects of the Greco-Roman world in which they lived and thrived. By exploring Jewish novellas, apocalypses, biblical interpretations, and historical records, we will gain new insight into the lives of the earliest Jews, who wrote religious texts in Antioch, the “gateway to the east;” in Rome, the political capital of the Empire; in Alexandria, the cultural crown jewel of the Greco-Roman world; and in the foothills of the Judean desert.

In partnership with Skokie Valley Agudath Jacob Synagogue
Location: Skokie Valley, 8825 E Prairie Road, Skokie, IL (Chicagoland Area)
