Rabbinic decisors have shaped the contours of Halakhah over the generations with their determinations across Jewish law, including in complex and controversial cases. This series will analyze the process and methods of three such Poskim who published responsa over the past two centuries – The Hatam Sofer, Hazon Ish, and Rav Ovadia Yosef.
This lecture series will be hosted by Dr. Devora Steinmetz, and guest lectures will include Prof. Benny Brown on the Hazon Ish, Rabbi Elli Fischer on the Hatam Sofer and Rabbi Dr. Richard Hidary on Rabbi Benzion Hai Uziel.
Session 1: Professor Benny Brown is an expert on ultra-Orthodox Judaism and its religious formation, a professor of Jewish Thought at the Hebrew University, and a researcher at the Israel Democracy Institute.
Session 2: Rabbi Dr. Richard Hidary is a professor of Judaic Studies at Yeshiva University, a rabbi at Sephardic Synagogue, and a faculty member for the Wexner Heritage Program.
Session 3: Rabbi Elli Fischer is a writer, translator, and historian of Halakhah with particular interest in Hungary.

Dr. Devora Steinmetz
Dr. Devora Steinmetz serves on the faculty of Drisha Institute in the United States and Israel and on the leadership team of Drisha’s new yeshiva in Israel. The founder of Beit Rabban, she is the author of scholarly articles on Talmud, Midrash, and Bible as well as of two books: From Father to Son: Kinship, Conflict, and Continuity in Genesis and Punishment and Freedom: The Rabbinic Construction of Criminal Law.
