Yom Kippur opens with this most powerful, albeit peculiar, communal prayer of Kol Nidrei. This year, part 1 of the Stanley Rudoff Memorial High Holy Day Lecture Series will explore the history and halakhah of this controversial tefillah with special focus on how annulling past and/or future vows sets the spiritual tone for the Day of Atonement. Shmuel Hain

Shmuel Hain is the Senior Rabbi of Young Israel Ohab Zedek of North Riverdale/Yonkers and Rosh Beit Midrash at SAR High School where he directs the graduate Beit Midrash Fellowship, teaches advanced Jewish Studies, and oversees after-school and alumni learning programs. He also serves as the  Chair and Series Editor of The Orthodox Forum, a religious and academic think tank convened by Yeshiva University. He has co-authored and edited several volumes of Torah and academic scholarship. He is pursuing a PhD in Talmud and Rabbinics and received ordination from the Rabbi Elchanan Theological Seminary where he was an inaugural fellow of the Bella and Harry Wexner Kollel Elyon.
